Choose a state to explore its cities, counties and time zones.
This directory covers 52 states, territories and districts. Each state hub lists its largest cities, its counties, the ZIP code ranges in use, the time zones it spans and the capital. Start from a state and drill down to a county and then to an individual city to see population, density, ZIP codes and nearby places.
How is the directory organized?
The United States is divided into states, and each state is divided into counties or county equivalents such as parishes in Louisiana and boroughs in Alaska. Cities, towns and unincorporated communities sit inside counties. The table below shows how many places each state contains in our data, its largest place, and its capital. A state with many small municipalities, such as Pennsylvania or Illinois, has a very long list, while a compact state has a short one.
If you know the state, open its hub and use the list of counties to narrow down. If you only know a city name, remember that many names repeat: each city page lists other places with the same name so you can confirm you have the right one. If you are comparing locations for travel or relocation, use the distance calculator and read our comparison checklist. For terms such as county, FIPS code and census-designated place, see the county guide and the place-type guide.
