About UsCityDex and Our Methodology

An independent reference for US places, built from open data and explained clearly.

What is this website?

UsCityDex is an independent reference website about places in the United States. It publishes pages for cities, towns, counties and states, along with tools for looking up ZIP codes, measuring distances and checking time zones. The goal is simple: give people a fast, clear answer to practical location questions without clutter.

Where does the data come from?

City, county, coordinate, population, density, time zone and ZIP code information comes from the SimpleMaps US Cities Database, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), which compiles U.S. Census Bureau geography and other public sources. We add calculations on top of it, including rankings within a state or county, distances between places, nearest neighbors and distances to major cities.

How do we handle accuracy?

Population and density figures are estimates and can differ from the Census Bureau's official counts, particularly for large cities where the source may reflect the wider urban area. We label these figures as estimates on every page and explain the differences in our guide to understanding city population numbers. Distances are straight-line calculations between place centers, not driving directions. For legal, financial or safety decisions, always confirm facts with an official source.

How are pages written?

City, county and state pages are generated from the data, using writing rules that adapt the text to each place: a large city gets different explanations from a small town, and a place that shares its name with others gets a disambiguation section. The guides, tools and policy pages are written by hand. We only publish city pages for places with at least 5,000 people in our data, because smaller communities do not have enough reliable data to support a useful page. Smaller places still appear in the county pages.

How do you report an error?

If you spot an incorrect fact, a missing place or an outdated ZIP code, please write to us through the contact page with the page address and what you believe is correct. We review corrections and update the data when the source supports the change.

Is the site independent?

Yes. UsCityDex is not affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States Postal Service or any government agency. Any advertising shown on the site is clearly separated from the content and does not influence the data we publish.
